SolidWorks Administration Bible is now Available

October 29th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

sab1The new SolidWorks Administration Bible is now available. I received a shipment of books, so book sellers will also be getting theirs soon. You can buy the book either directly from me, or from Amazon. The book is 570 pages, black and white, with a companion website. There is not much data to download.

This book is not about modeling, so don’t come crying to me because it doesn’t have a model of an F-5 in it. Old versions of SolidWorks software are not compatible with new version files. This is not my fault. Ask Jeff Ray about that. If you have to ask if this is for beginners, the book is probably not for you. There are no step-by-step tutorials in this book. It is assumed you already know how to use the software, and you are reading the book to learn how to administer SolidWorks. This book does not cover educational versions, and is not intended for classroom use. Warantee is void if you are enrolled in classes of any kind. If you are unable to read, this book will not help you. Feeding this book to goats will not make the goat able to administer SolidWorks. If you need a version with larger type, go buy a magnifying glass, which will also work with other books. If you want a free book, go buy one first, then ask your SolidWorks reseller to reimburse you.

If you’re wondering why I haven’t been blogging much recently, this book is part of the reason.

Will I have a couple of armloads of these at Anaheim? Prolly not. I was able to sneak surfacing books in the back of the convertible, but I’m not driving to Anaheim.

    Man, first post in a while and it’s a sales job, thanks.

    Kidding aside, I haven’t read it but I’m sure those of us who know your talent and need this kind of help will be admins before we know it.

    Dang! We just hired a goat as CAD admin. Perhaps we’ll move him to sales….

    Pre-ordered my 2010 Bible (est. delivery March?!) so I would assume you will still be busy with other things besides blogging for a while.

    Congratulations Matt. I’m sure this will be another top seller for you. See you at World, the first drink is on me :-) , Steve will buy the rest ;-)

    I’ve been drooling over this book since i first heard of it on your’ blog.
    I am finally getting a trainee, so i will have someone to practice.

    Why does the book have a wet stain (around that large number 6)? Did it get wet in back of your convertible? Are there any dry books available?

  6. October 30th, 2009 at 14:26 | #6

    @ralphg
    Yeah, I wondered about that myself. There is no telling what a publisher will do.

    Actually, its wet because the previous poster said he’s been drooling over it for some time.

    Perhaps you could post the Table of Contents here?

    This is the kind of stuff I have to deal with on a weekly basis with my customers. I’ve never had more than a collection of different training manuals, websites, etc. to direct them to. Now I have something that I can tell them to go get. I just looked at the TOC on Amazon and it looks great!!!

    I like the way you present ideas on the use of software based on concepts rather than step by step cookbook. I am sure that your book will help make things run smoother. I am concerned about your marketing; the clear elimination of goats, students, and illiterates will certainly reduce sales.

    @Jim Anders

    The table of contents is here: http://media.wiley.com/product_data/excerpt/64/04705372/0470537264-1.pdf

    I hope this book is worthwhile. A fair bit of research went into it, and I actually got some SW people to contribute.

    Think you could bring an Admin bible and a Surfacing bible with you to our User Group Meeting next month? I’ll bring cash… :D

    Is this information also applicable to PDMWorks Enterprise? I’m not new by any means to PDMWorks and am looking forward to getting your book, but I will be working on a project that is using Enterprise — can I stop looking or can you recommend 3rd party material on it.

    Thanks,

    Autograph, you give out autographs. My two Bibles don’t have any autographs, what’s the deal?

    What page is your autograph supposed to be on, Matt? My Admin Bible apparently didn’t come with one, either! Received it yesterday and have barely scratched the surface with reading. I’m looking forward to putting it to good use!

    • November 5th, 2009 at 12:06 | #16

      Sorry if I forgot to autograph anyone’s book. I just never thought that people would want a book that had been scribbled in. When I sign the books, I sign them on the grayish page in the front that has the book name and my name. If you want a signature, I’ll email you one. Or you could get Ricky Jordan to sign it for you. If it’s there and you can’t read it, I’ve been experimenting with training goats recently, and I’m a little distracted.

    How many books do I have to buy to get a signed goat?

    sorry couldn’t resist

    • November 6th, 2009 at 15:16 | #18

      I can sign all the goats you bring me, but I can’t ship a goat. I don’t have boxes to fit. I could send a goat in a number of small boxes for reassembly on your end. I’ve done this before, but the reassembly instructions have been eaten by the goat, which is just as well, since I don’t think they worked that well anyway.

    @matt
    Matt I strongly object to you signing goats, force feeding them dry SW books and to their temporary disassembly.
    Now that I know goats will be harmed by the production of this book I’ll have to review my procurement policy

  18. November 6th, 2009 at 15:52 | #20

    @Neil
    I don’t think disassembling a goat really harms it, does it? Is it better off assembled than it is disassembled? It’s a toss up if you ask me.

    @matt
    Look Matt some of my best friends are goats..I feel uncomfortable discussing this.
    If you must I’d suggest you pack ‘n’ go all the the derived parts.
    Although this is in itself dangerous cos the relations might be lost I think its probably better than running the risk of the instructions being eaten and therefore the goat being reassembled in the wrong order.
    The box might be smaller if you prepack the goat in a simple extrusion and then suppress it.

    My stuff has nothing about Enterprise. Your best bet for Enterprise is Devon Sowell, http://designsmarter.typepad.com/devonsowell/.

    Hello Gary-

    I have a book about Solidworks PDM, Workgroup, Enterprise and manual file management.

    @matt
    No need to send a goat, trained, assembled/disassembled or otherwise. Had I been more observant to the early pages of the book – which I hastily sped past to get to the content – I would have noticed a well-penned, black autograph on the second page inside the cover. My apologies and thanks!

    Hi Matt –
    I just received a copy yesterday…thank you.
    This book is packed with info so now I understand why you weren’t blogging :-)
    (The text that follows should be purple) When you get a chance can you include a model of an F-5?(end purple text)
    Looking forward to seeing you at SWW.
    Thanks again,
    Joy
