Technical Alert on 64 bit PhotoWorks (important!)

January 19th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

Devon Sowell sounded the alert for this one. SolidWorks is saying that this is because using Photoworks with 64 bit sp2 can cause data corruption, but Devon has been saying that there are other problems with 64 bit 2010 with WPDM. Read the technical alert here. To repeat, SolidWorks 09 sp5, 10 sp1 and sp2 in 64 bit have corruption problems when using Photoworks. If you are using these versions, it is recommended to avoid Photoworks. If you need to use Photoworks, you should use another version of SolidWorks or a 32 bit installation.

    @Devon Sowell
    You’re gonna need your own shade of purple on this blog, Devon. Thanks for alerting everyone about this serious problem.

    Yes, thanks Devon.

    WOW, this is scarry! I’ve been using 2010 SP 1 on Vista 64 for a while without issue with PW. I have PW set to add-in automatically on start up. Maybe this has saved me? At any rate. I can’t afford to loose any data or take my system out so I think I’ll uninstall SP1 and go back SP0.

    Seems like the safest thing to do. Another good argument for backward version compatibility.

    For anyone who doesn’t want to read all the way through the forum post, a hotfix should be available very soon. We’ll let everyone know as soon as we have news.

    Thanks for helping update everyone Matt.

    If you read carefully, it sounds like this is only an issue if the PW add-in is turned on after you computer is using 2G or more of RAM. If your add-in loads when first starting SW, this might not be a problem (assuming you don’t aren’t using 2G of RAM at the time).

    Hooray for QC

    @Rob Rodriguez
    If you are not using PW don’t load the addin, it makes allot of memory troubles, especially when working with the motion analysis (animation). it has a bad memory management.

    Very scary, shows how important a good backup and system image backup are.
    Both 64bit machines here are running 2010 SP1 with auto PW addin and haven’t had any problems.
