Oracle CEO Larry Ellison says “cloud is fashion”

Read the Cnet article, and the original article quoting Larry Ellison.

This is a great quote, but it sounds a little sarcastic:

Said Ellison: “Everything’s called cloud now. If you’re in the data center, it’s a private cloud. There’s nothing left but cloud computing. People say I’m against cloud computing–how can I be against cloud computing when that’s all there is?”

Yeah so what it amounts to is a service providing SW over the internet where you pay more than you do now unless you are only an occassional user.

The real value of the Cloud buzz word for marketing is that it obscures the profit making nature of the service, the dependancy and gradual monopolisation.

If you are a dedicated follower of fashion you will love this Cloudness.
You can participate in a global sized fantasy of a technology delivering mankind from the evils of CAD. Everyone can particpate regardless of location and hardware and o/s.

The DS cloud sets you free of that pesky maintenance and those distasteful bug extermination duties. Its all someone elses problem over the horizon. In fact there are no problems. It all runs faster, better, stronger, longer, stretchier than it did before. It rebuilds itself when it breaks. It replicates. It feeds. Its entertainment. Now you do have the time to air race around Homer Simpson doing a walkthough of your model and when you finish you can upload your chemical plant model to 3dvia.

All praise Dassault Systems the provider of all.

OT Q.What is it about the world today that people can successfully propogate delusion to the masses and they will go along with it? We get this from govt, product advertising, more recently from bankers, the FED and Wall St, and now its here in the CAD industry…perhaps watching too much television as a child softens and conditions the mind for ready exploitation as an adult..

OK I am done now Matt ;) next SW topic please.

Larry has been tyring to downplay the movement towards cloud computing. He is trying to sell a bill of goods (including Agile) that doesn’t support SaaS, and they are having their lunch eaten by the likes of Salesforce.com. As i mentioned the other day, Agile recently such down their last SaaS application and servers, and left many customers without any options. His recent campaign strikes me as more sour grapes than any meaningful insight.
