Is it time…?

I notice that SolidWorks has put up notices for the call for papers for SolidWorks World 2011, and more recently for general sign up for attendees. I have to admit, I’m feeling even less enthusiasm this year than last year.

I’m wondering if it isn’t time. Time for SolidWorks to step up to the plate and show some leadership in web-connected collaboration activity. No, I’m not talking about cloud BS, I’m talking about an on-line conference. This is something that more users would find useful than CAD-in-the-Cloud, and it would be easier to pull off. Video stream presentations. Enable questions through webex, Skype or twitter.

“The commununity” is too exclusive. This is 2010. Why is there not an online component of SolidWorks World?

I couldn’t agree more. So many users I know cannot get funding to go but to pick and choose and be able to participate remotely would make the experience overall for those there and afar better overall.
The last couple of years this has been toyed with but covering sessions live and getting feedback is one of the things I personally have seen get more attention. Even when I cover the general sessions, 600 – 1000 people log on to see what is being talked about. If the breakouts were all streamed and could be setup to have a virtual classroom along with the live group I think the impact of SWWC will be 10 fold of what it is today.

Well said. There is no way on the planet I will ever attend a SWW in the USA due to cost and time away, but I might be able to attend online. I just renewed my subs again, be nice to see some extra value in it by at least being able to view the general sessions rather than relying on the army of bloggers.

Last year SolidWorks called me to ask for a quote about attending SWW….I gave them one :)

I live in Rosita, CO—which generally doesn’t even appear on maps. And though I’ve not yet gone to SWW, I consider myself fairly well connected with what’s happening in the design and CAD tools realm (among other things).

Skype, GoToMeeting, and yeah, even twitter are common tools to get things done. Generally speaking, there’s no advantage in my being face-to-face with a client, other than to get a firm grasp of what the project really requires—so I’m able to live in a tiny mountain ghost town and still get work done quickly and effectively.

I remember seeing the National Hardware Show change suddenly nearly ten years ago. The first time I was there, Stanley had ~20 SKUs of my designs on display in their uber-booth 2000. The next year (or year after) Stanley had NO booth. In fact, lots of people decided they really didn’t need the face time anymore. I’ve not been to the NHS since they split and went to Las Vegas, but I wonder if this trend has continued—or whether the manufacturers from overseas now completely own the show (after all, they’re the ones who are actually manufacturing most of the stuff for the big labels these days).

    SWW—on the cloud!

I really look forward to SolidWorks World every year. I prefer the live event over any virtual meeting. Can’t have much fun watching a virtual meeting!

I will add one voice SCREAMING for SW to move toward being a cloud-based SaaS … I would recommend starting the movement by hosting the developer facets of SWW on the cloud!

Dassault needs to recognize the importance of more aggressively growing and cultivating its developer community … just as Salesforce has _survived_ by aggressively growing its developer ecosystem with force.com. … what I am saying is that a more open, cloud-based mindset needs to to be pervasive.

I hope to attend SWW2011 …perhaps, it’s because SWW is an excuse for people from the frozen tundra like to visit San Antonio in January … and there are aspects of face-to-face meetings that add a dimension to virtual meetings … but I’d heartily agree that SWW should be primarily an archived, cloud-based event, primarily for people who are not in attendance, but choose to get things done and pay attention to only those facets they need to.

Both SW and SWW need to move in the direction of being cloud-based.

    @Mark Bruns
Mark, can you give any reason for that other than screaming? WHY does the cloud based mind set need to be pervasive? In what way is DS not cultivating its developer (partner) base? They’ve been doing it for years, and there are tons of partners. Screaming irrational crap is one thing, its hard to take it seriously unless you have a reason for it. You seem like the kind of guy who would have reasons. Would you share them?

Public presentations have a different feel when they are entirely web-ified. Meeting individuals face-to-face does have an advantage for those seeking more than from the experience. Webinars have their place. But so do seminars.

Yeah, I agree that face to face meetings have a lot of value. I’m not trying to say that SWW is a worthless event, I’m trying to say that it would be even more valuable if you opened access to people who cannot make it to the face to face meeting. Not in place of, but in addition to.
