We have a winner

October 3rd, 2008 6 comments

He doesn’t win anything except the right to call himself a winner. Several people guessed where I was in the previous post. It probably wasn’t much of a guess, because these people really knew. But one commenter (mer) guessed where I was and why I was there.

I was in Huntsville, Alabama in the Marriott (room 708 to be precise) visiting the Siemens PLM office to learn more about Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology, which I’ll just call SEwST from here on. A lot has been written about SEwST, but some how none of it truly captures the concept behind the software. I’ve written a lot about it, and much of it was written with the main goal of stimulating a conversation. I wanted to learn, and it seemed real information was hard to come by.

Knowing what I now know from actually having used the software instead of just reading white papers and copy/pasted marketing material, I have a different point of view. I’m not going to give away any secrets just yet, but I’m working on writing some things that will hopefully give you a more intuitive look at what SEwST is doing.

Is it really the next big thing? Is it really going to eliminate history CAD? Or is it just a nice marketing wrapper on old technology? It takes a while for a new user  to understand the history based paradigm, how hard is it to understand the ST paradigm? Is it really easier for 2D users? What are its strengths and weaknesses? These are questions I will tackle in an upcoming article.
